Time Machine…

“Carnaval”

“Gumbo”

Last night  along Milwaukee Ave I saw a pair of Deloreans parked outside a retro cafe , maybe it was part of a Back to the Future night, but it reminded me of  a little pair of groovers i’ve been wanting to share from an album who’s title also involves another time machine. This is “Cortijo and his Time Machine (y su Maquina del Tiempo)” on Coco records from 1973; an album with killer  fusion of styles ranging from salsa, Latin jazz, funk, samba, bomba, all with a tasty groove that drives the tracks on in a swirl of rhythm and freshness. “Carnaval” has a nice blend of Brazillian percussion with a great horn section produced by another staple of the Nuyurican sound and  label mate Harvey Averne. “Gumbo” is the other killer, a slow funker that kicks picks up the pace right away into some jazzier flair and then weaves in out of it’s sweet funky groove. Enjoy the little time machine trip from us at Sonorama. EB
