Following the release of the Woodstock film in 1970, Santana became an instant success with their Afro-Cuban blend of pscyh/blues/jazz/rock that soon toured the the globe including a prematurely ended tour of South America known as the Lotus tour in 1973. The tour must have nonetheless left a mark on the South American scene because of these two versions of “Guayaba” which one can assume are indirect inspirations from that tour. Originally penned by Tito Puente as a classic cha cha cha ,”Guayaba” never received the latin rock treatment by Santana as did some of Puente’s other compositions like their hit version of “Oye como Va” (originally a charanga) or “Para los rumberos”, but instead two killer versions the song emerge in S. Here’s Puente’s original version of the tune which is also pretty sweet as well, it’s a nice tight cha cha cha/mambo that chugs along with all the elements of the era, greats keys, the call and response yells, the whistling, and the great start/stop arrangement.
I don’t know whether Lucho Macedo’s version or Logia’s came first but their similarities are undeniable, but regardless each has its own charm and cool. La Logia Sarabanda from Uruguay cranked out this LP in 1972 with some insane latin funk/psych/rock workouts of mostly original compositions by Miguel Loubet with the exception of this version of Puente’s tune. The tune has a nice laid back vibe with some ad-libed improvising and some nice wah wah guitars leads over the group’s Spanglish lyrics.
From Peru comes this version by one of Peru’s undeniable heavy weights of tropical soundz, Lucho Macedo. In the 50’s and 60’s his Sonora rocked Peruvian dance floors with undeniable swing and highlighted with Macedo’s inpressive piano and arranging skills. This version is unquestionably my favorite, its got all the elements, awesome energy, tremendo swing, that great pachuco dude revving up the band, and of course great guitar work and latin percussions that all come together to make it rock out.
