Hometown: Austin, Texas
Upon his arrival to the states, Victor-Andres Cruz “El Guámbito” found refuge and a profound sense of identity rooted in the rhythms and folklore of his native Colombia . Raised as an amalgamation between the Colombian countryside, Florida, New England and New York City, Victor created a voice and a place where all worlds converge.
Influenced by cumbia, bullerengue, gaita music, Colombian Andean songs, Southern Mali’s wassoulou music, Sahara’s desert blues, as well as 60’s and 70’s delirious psychedelia from Africa and South America, Nemegata is a mystical fierce power trio currently stretching its roots in Austin.
In 2018 the band self released Nemegata’s first single, a lo-fi, raw sounding recording which took place at a rehearsal space in Queens, NY using a 4-track cassette recorder. The tracks were produced in collaboration by “Niño Lento” and played on drums by “Dilemastronauta”, two of the masterminds behind the emblematic Combo Chimbita.
Now setting up base in Austin,Texas, Victor has joined forces with Fabian Rincon and Cesar Valencia to launch this debut LP a far reaching exploration into the many channels of influence by these 3 artists. Fusing elements of psychedelic rock with traditional call and response chants, acid-drenched landscapes all swelling into what is without a doubt a sonic trip towards an instant classic!

Dusty Groove-“A really striking group from the contemporary Austin scene – one that’s led by Victor Andrews Cruz, and who blend together his Colombian roots with some deeper strands of guitar-based music – with resonances that move between the fuzzy sounds of Saharan guitar and some of the moodier elements of the American underground! Yet although the guitar is very strong in the lead, it may well be Victor Andrews’ vocals that are the most powerful element of the group – this really deep, yearning approach that almost seems to fuse a Nick Cave sense of power onto Colombian folklyrical modes – all driven on really strongly by the fierce drums and bass in the trio.”
