Diggin’ Deep

Dorian’s Through the Record Shop, a destination that wears its love for all things vinyl enthusiastically (a record shop, 6000 plus LP jackets that act as acoustic enhancing sound insulation and DJs who only play vinyl records) will be celebrating this infatuation with its first Through the Record Shop Day on Saturday, April 13 between 11 AM and 3 PM. Since its opening in late September of 2018, Dorian’s record shop has been featuring a diverse grouping of new and used vinyl treasures selected by Music Director Joe Bryl and some of Chicago’s deep diggers and vinyl enthusiasts. Some of these records have been unearthed and sadly overlooked in thrift stores, some from street-side vendors in Mexico City while others are new 180 gram reissues of rarities and little-seen imports.

Besides the normal and somewhat abnormal fare that is offered in the record shop, we will be supplementing our diverse stock with LP’s by critically acclaimed local labels International Anthem, Numero Group and Still Music. These independent musical taste makers have each have put their personal stamp on their catalogs by featuring such forward thinking Jazz artists like Makaya McCraven, reissues of archival rarities by mythic synth band Spontaneous Overthrow and the west coast boogie funk of 9th Creation. And, tons more.

Adding to these musical gems, our Through the Record Shop Day will also be featuring a diverse selection of used vinyl records (both on 33.3 albums and 45 RPM) from the collection of some of Chicago’s premier record archaeologists, dealers and DJs. Dorian’s will transform its bar/restaurant into a vinyl pop-up shop where you can flip through bins of what is called “black gold” by record aficionados. As they say, “The hunt is on!”

The bar at Dorian’s will be featuring Bloody Mary’s and local beers to wet your palette while on the hunt for those elusive dusties that you yearn to own and hear. We will also be featuring some refreshing ice cream treats.

So, if you crave rare old soul records, Latin-tinged 45’s, peculiar electronic music, early garage pop, 50’s jazz, 60’s folk or 70’s psychedelic rock, pop on by our 1st Through the Record Shop Day pop-up and give your day a special spin.
