(((Sonorama Podcast))) No.13: Souvenirs

  1. -:-- / -:--

Hello everyone, we’re happy to bring you another little set of tunes for you listening enjoyment, the last couple of weeks have been a little inconsistent on the blog, partly due to some vacations on both of our parts, but the upside to that is that our travels have yielded some tasty fresh souvenirs, thats is records, that we’ll be incorporating in this podcast and in the weeks to come.

To start things out we threw in a track from a little group from West Africa who’ll be stopping into town to do a free set at Chicago’s own Millenium Park tonite, Thursday July 15th, apologies for the late notice, but if you can make the show don’t miss it, it should be a hot set of African funky bits, but moving on to the podcast, our travels took us to two distinct areas of the map, my [Eddy] travels took me to hot and sunny Miami, where I made some nice digs of tropical funk from the Miami scene from the 70’s along with more Colombian goodies that you’ll be hearing in the weeks to come as well. Miami as it turns out, has a pretty substantial Colombian population. I’ve thrown in some bits of latin funk-rock from the now defunct band Coke, another funky bit from  El Gran Fellove from nearby Cuba, plus a little crazy little cover of the Four Tops’ “Reach Out, I’ll Be There”, performed on a souvenir Lp by an Italian band who played on a Greek cruise ship!

Charly’s travels took him to the streets of New York City, where he also dug up some an assortment of latin goodies from across the globe including a little track by Cuban born Cascarita (Orlando Guerra), a singer who according to one source recognized Perez Prado’s gift as an arranger, appointing him to lead his band and by doing so perhaps paved the way for his legendary work in latin music. Additionaly check out New York’s Mr. Boogaloo Pete Rodriguez’s anthem “I Like it Like That”
